Years after obtaining an Associate degree in Science, I decided to return to school and pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Biology.  I have always been interested in Anatomy, Health and Disease; therefore, I focused on a pre-medical track.

Winston Salem State’s Department of Biological Sciences has provided me with an individualized learning experience.  The course tracks in Pre-Medicine have provided me with a deeper understanding of the science behind health and disease. The general and organic chemistry courses have been fundamental in equipping me with an understanding of the building blocks of life, from atoms to molecules, to living cells and tissues, to organisms.  I have learned that the laws of physics are not only observed around us, but also inside us.  Physics is in the acoustics of sound waves when speaking and hearing, optics is in vision and the eye, fluid flow in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and electrical currents occur within our body.  One year of Anatomy & Physiology coupled with Medical Terminology greatly enhanced my knowledge on the various organ systems, their diseases, and the various treatment methods/procedures.

Being a Latina enrolled in an HBCU, has provided me an opportunity to achieve not only academic growth, but cultural growth as well.  I have experienced firsthand the richness, warmth and traditions that accompany Winston Salem State University.  In our current society where cultural division runs so rampant, I feel very blessed to have been able to take this academic journey surrounded by many peers who are from a different ethnicity than mine.  I have become a better person and achieved cultural growth because of it.

After graduation I will pursue a career as a research assistant in biomedical research where I plan on furthering my skills and knowledge.  The motto of “Enter to Learn and Depart to Serve” will be fulfilled when I earn my Master’s in Biomedical Engineering or become a P.A. and contribute to the advances that improve human health.
